One of the conference highlights was an invited talk about the first-ever observations of a live giant squid in the wild, by Tsunemi Kubodera and Kyoichi Mori. In recognition of this historic event, Tsunemi Kubodera was presented with various gifts by Clyde Roper, including the "lifelike" model seen below right!

Other 2006 Conference Highlights
Aside from the serious business, there was of course the conference banquet, featuring the "squid dance" and a didgeridoo-playing competition. [There's a 10Mb .mpg video file linked to the middle image!]

The 2000 (Millennium) conference was held at the University of Aberdeen. It was supported by a grant from the European Commission. A particular feature of the conference was the contribution of a series of talks (and ultimately published papers) by a group of Russian and Ukranian scientists, led by the late Kir Nesis. The 2000 conference proceedings were published in the Bulletin of Marine Science, volume 71 (1-2) (2002).

Other 2000 Conference Highlights
The conference opened with a public leture by Richard Ellis, based on his book "In search of the giant squid", following which a panel of experts convened for a question and answer session. The session also featured a wonderful knitted giant squid contributed by Malcolm and Dot Clarke!
